Revenge...is it all that sweet?

Have you ever done anything to get revenge on somebody? Were you proud of what you did? Looking back would you change it?

For me, two things spring to mind. The first was when my sister and I were at secondary school. A guy in my year ran past my sister and knocked her over. He apologised and carried on. At first the hospital said she had sprained her wrist. However, a few days later we got a call saying that she had broken her wrist. At school later in the week the guy who had knocked her over came up to me (in front of all his friends) and started laughing and asking what I was going to do about it. Basically, he was showing off. I lost my temper and beat him up. Although at the time it seemed like a good idea, it got me a reputation for violence that I never shook off and I really regret it now.

The second instance was about 3 years ago. Rob and I lived in a street house the backed onto an area where a lot of asian immigrants (legal and otherwise) lived. They insisted on playing loud music at 6am on a Saturday and Sunday - The only time Rob and I got a lie in as we both started work really early during the week. Instead of calling the council to report the noise I would open the back door and all the windows and cook bacon! It lead to a lot of arguments that could have been easily avoided.

So, 'fess up...what have you people been doing to get your own back?

[IMG] I am not a prticularly vengeful person, I quite easily forgive.

But revenge is damn sweet when you get it and you get it RIGHT. The trick is just not to go overboard. It's easier to do a series of smaller things then try and patch up something that was too big as a retaliation.

I'm not a revenge-person. I can understand why some people seek it and why it might feel good to get back at people. But personally I've never really 'got revenge' on somebody in a big way, and even little 'get backs' never make me feel particularly good. It's all far too much hassle for me. If someone does something to me, I usually just walk away and try to forget it. Maybe I'm just pathetic and meek, or more likely, just unbelievably lazy.

When I was in junior high a kid spit in my hamburger. So I kicked the sh*t out of him.

    Totally sweet.

If someone pisses me off they deserve everything coming to them.

As for concrete examples of what I've done... well, let's not get there.

Yours too, huh? Given how nice I was to her and the minor nature of my offenses you'd think she'd have some balance, but No o o o o!

Silvery, you should have remembered what the original Montresor said about revenge:

On topic: Fortunately it hasn't been put to the test but I think if somebody harmed me or my loved ones and couldn't be punished through legal channels, I *would* seek revenge. I don't believe in letting thugs and bullies get away with it. Other than that, I don't consider myself particularly vengeful, but certainly not a very forgiving person, either. ;)

I'm not particularly gifted when it comes to revenge. But I do take a certain joy when karma pays back someone that has wronged me or someone I care about...

There is a certain pleasure to watching a batch of home-made thermite burn a hole straight through the engine block of your buddys' prized '68 camaro, after finding out he was messing around with your better half while you were deployed.:flaming:

Although I think A LOT about revenge I rarely act on it. I'm with Gnarf of the gratification of karma payback though. In fact I was very pleased to hear about and ex-coworker who was about the most negative hateful person I can think of getting fired from the place where we both used to work. Although I quite that long-term job around 3 years ago I'm still friends with one of my old bosses and most of their family. I'm so happy the (female dog) co-worker got what was coming to her. :D

The 1st instance was a bully who went too far and asked for it - good on you!:D
That 2nd instance could so easily have been avoided, I think (unless they literally insisted on playing music). I had neighbours who responded like this to disturbances, which is a nice example: My somali neighbours (not next door, fortunatly) are noisy and inconsiderate, and this is of great irritation to those who live next to them. I invited my neighbours to a housewarming, and before the Somalis arrived, their upstairs neighbours voiced their irritation about them to me: they described how annoying all their ruckus is, and that it goes on until late at night. They never spoke to them normally, to tell them that their behaviour was disturbing. I told them how I went up to my own upstairs neighbour on the second morning, and asked her not to wear high heels in the morning, because I'm trying to get to sleep after a night shift. She complied after some discussion (earplugs are uncomfortabe and don't work), when it became clear to her that she was causing me quite some frustration. It was nice to note that I didn't even need to mention that having a hard surface in the bedroom was not allowed in our building, due to the wooden floor.
Now this couple that was having trouble with the Somalis, were a dutch guy and his pregnant japanese girlfriend, they both come from a culture with tendencies to bottle up their irritations until they EXPLODE in a bout of anger.
Now the first time that the Somalis were made aware of the couples' irritation, was when the guy started to sarcastically sing along with their muslim music at 1am at night. Of course they have a right to do this, I thought the noise was terribly antisocial. But it resulted in mutual animosity between the neighbours, making it impossible for the guy to do what he should have done much earlier: Ask his neighbour to be quiet!
The Somalis might have come from a mudhut village, where rooms aren't built next to eachother, and making a noise at any time of day is acceptable.
Nowadays the Somalis still make noise, but it's gotten less frequent. The dutch guy and japanese gal have moved house, perhaps partly to escape the Somali's noise, but probably because they had a baby.

That's the side-story, the moral of the story is: Try to solve things peacefully first.
Except when they deliberately laugh after hurting someone, then you should teach them a lesson.

I had trouble with an insane flatmate once, who threatened to put my stuff on the street via SMS on new year's eve. I had to restrain myself from trying to get revenge, but it worked out in the end. I'll keep a tediously long story short, and cut to the chase. Although he wanted these things to happen to me, it was eventually HIM who got kicked out of his apartment, stopped recieving subsidy to study, had to quit his study altogether, and left the centre of Amsterdam to live with his mother again. All I did, was show the fake sub-renting contract to the landlord, but it wasn't done out of revenge (i showed it to him to prove that I had a right to kick the door in and move my stuff out). But I can't say that I didn't take pleasure out of his misery.:D:shake::grin::lol:

That's another side-story:rolleyes:, the moral of that story is: Be patient, nutters will burn themselves up eventually, and inevitably face justice.

In my experience, revenge is empty. I've never found it to be satisfying and it certainly has not eased the hurt of an instigating slight. I've blackened eyes and crushed feelings in retaliation and have never found it to be sweet.

Revenge is sweetest when it planned thoroughly and executed precisely.

I'm generally a nice guy, but if you f*** me over, I will get you back...usually 10 fold.

Here's one of my favorite "growing up" stories:
It all started when I got one of my older brothers all wet with a squirt gun. The next day he and a friend cornered me as I was walking home from school and stuck a hose down my pants... :bad: Anyway, this particular brother had a waterbed and a girlfriend he liked to sneak over (everyone but my parents knew). So to get him back, I snuck into his room and unscrewed the fill cap to his bed. Needless to say they both got soaked, *and* my parents heard the screaming and yelling, and caught him alone in his room with a girl...a big no-no in our household!

Probably the earliest example of revenge was what I did to my cousin after he told on me when I stole a bag of candy from a store. I was probably 7 or 8 years old, and he was a few years older than me, and I trusted that he'd keep quiet. I even shared some of the loot with him...so when he told my parents, I knew I *had* to get him back. About a month or so later, both of our families were at a department store...my aunt was pushing a cart around that my cousin had tossed his jacket in. I snatched a pair of women's panties that had one of those electronic security devices attached to it, and slipped it in to his jacket pocket when my aunt wasn't looking. When we were ready to go, the alarms went off when he tried to leave the store. The store manager came over and had my aunt search his pockets...and the look on everyone's faces when she pulled out the panties was classic! He got grounded for a week, and the most awkward talk from his parents and mine...the whole time denying the crime. A few years ago, I fessed up to the deed, and we both had a good laugh. :D

Remind me never to get in a fight with some of you guys...

When someone angers me I usually feel like fireballing them on the spot, literrary. (though I get angry at myself to a much higher degree then at other people, in general)

The feeling, though intense, passes quickly (in a matter of minutes) and my mood improves. It's rather pointless to bother getting a revenge at that point.

If I'm getting even, I either do it right then and there, in the heat of the moment (and probably regret it) or never. So far, the score is tilted heavily to never.
