Any ideas on a good resource for powerplay builds in BG2? I was pretty in the know years ago, but that was SOA, and not TOB. Certain builds such as Kensai/Mage etc are less effective in this game I'd imagine. Even just a basic idea would be appreciated. Cheers.

Depends on what you mean by "powerplay".

I tend to think of it in terms of tanking ability combined with something else. So multi-class fighter/mage, fighter/thief, ranger/cleric all fit the bill for me. I say multi rather than dual because that way you get HLA's from from classes to choose from. The downside is you lose out on kits, but if you don't mind cheating, you can assign a kit using shadowkeeper (I do this all the time).

Dear friend, melee isn't as straightforward a matter in later TOB because many foes have high enough THAC0 to blow through even ACs of -10, (so having your kensai/wizard turn on his Shield Amulet won't necessarily save you from a beating...!) but it's still a very important part of the equation.

Inquisitor paladins are still quite strong and their Inquisitor Dispel ability remains quite useful. The addition of Watcher's Keep also adds two new powerful bastard swords that work well for paladins.

Ranger/Clerics remain powerful and useful due to their huge spell selection.

Dual or multiclass thieves take on a whole new dimension with the "Use Any Item" High Level Ability, which lets thief characters basically use any item. This gets crazy when dual classing kensais or wizardslayers to thieves because suddenly, wizardslayers can use all the magical items they couldn't, and any high-level thief (single, dual, or multi) can start using class-restricted items like the Holy Avenger!

The kensai/wizard isn't the all-rounder melee monster he was in SOA but he can still stay competitive with stoneskin, mirror image, and the super-powerful high-level spells (similacrum, etc.). Dual-wielding Celestial Fury and Dakkon's katana from the bonus merchant will easily get you through SOA but might not hold up throughout the entirety of TOB.

In all cases, you should strongly consider taking some kind of arcane caster with you. Have fun, dear friend!
