I just started a HoF game from the very beginning.

I only have one question for now, but instead of cluttering the board (since I know I'll be getting a whole lot more questions popping into my melon), I decided to condense them into one thread.

My first question is about the spell "sleep" in HoF mode. Since this spell goes off of the Hit Die of the enemies, will it ever work in HoF mode? I couldn't put any goblins to sleep in the prologue, and I'm wondering if this is a pattern I can expect from here on out (and if so, I'll stop wasting precious spell slots on "sleep").

If it's not an effective spell, please name others that are similar to it (for instance, will "horror" work?).

    TIA

Yes, it is effective, but Sleep also allows STs, so it is not as efficient as a Chaos spell for example. The Hit Die of the enemies in normal and HoF is the same, the only difference is that in HoF their HPs are artificially increased (tripled I think).
Grease spell is very nice to use, since you can slow them down. Same can be said about Entangle.
I would advise against Horror. For level 2 spells, you would better go for Stinking Cloud, the only problem is you won't get it until Vale of Shadows. OTOH, you can bypass some areas in the Kuldahar Pass until you are more experienced.

Charm person is the spell to use against goblins and orcs. It creates good cannon fodder and decreases the number of attackers by one.

Chromatic orb is fantastic once you reach lvl 5, it is th only easy way to deal with the scary ogres in the cave. Failed save stuns the victim and you can pelt them with ranged attacks. Fast.

By that time a cleric should also be able to cast Hold Person. Although, it would only work on orcs not on ogres.

I couldn't get sleep to work in HoF + insane modes.

Horror was effective in scaring a couple of goblins at a time.

Grease was very useful to initally slow up attackers.

My most useful spell at the start was entangle, though. It lasts a long time and has a huge area of effect. The only disadvantage is that archers and spellcasters can still attack you from a distance while entangled.

Just tested, Color Spray also affects goblins and is useful. Though you must be careful not to catch your party members by it too!

    Good to know!

It also have found chromatic orb useful. My bard gained enough spell levels for the orb to be able to paralyze enemies early in the game!

That's because bards level up faster. They are the best arcane spellcasters for low level spells.

You know, I've found cone area of effect style spells too dangerous. My mages are always in the back. So they can't cast them forwards. They may be useful for surprise attacks from the rear. But in those cases, I prefer a defensive spell to protect the mages (like mirror image, or invisibility). Following up mirror image with a spell to stun the surprise attackers, could work. But I prefer a defensive spell with a fast cast speed like invisibility. And then move into a more protective position (behind the tanks).
