Request Yves the Tale-Chaser's Tales... (possible spoilers)

I don't have Torment installed on my friend's computer, and I'm quite far away from my own copy of the game at the moment, but I have a request...

I've been looking through some old posts here on the boards, and have been intrigued by one of the tales either told by Yves, or told to her...

Could someone with the abilities to do so, please post the texts of Nordom's tale to Yves (including Morte's reaction), the "that was your first wish" tale, and also the last tale that Yves tells (that I've never been able to get in-game) : the one about the advocate and his daughter.

I'd appreciate it very much.

I never knew about that last tale.
Okay, hehe... apparently you have to ask the Practical Incarnation why he killed Deionarra before you can completely explain it to Iannis, which triggers this story.
That's quite an oversight.
---------------------------------------
Yves: Yves smiles pleasantly at you. "Greetings, again. I have come across a tale you might wish to hear. Shall I share it with you?"

NO: "Yes, please."

Yves: "There was a man, a prestigious man, that for all his wealth and status was terribly unhappy. His daughter had perished, and what little was left of his life was shadowed by the gloom of her passing."
"So it happened that a former lover of the daughter came to him and spoke of her with meaning and feeling, restoring the light to his heart. And in so doing, both found two wholly different things, each of which would prove precious to them in separate ways."
"One found the spark of life returned to him, the gloom chased from his eyes and the corners of his mind."
"And the man, the lover, the petitioner found something else that was to prove more precious to him on his journey: regret."
"For it is regret that can change the nature of a man, it is said, though perhaps only the Gray Sisters know it for certain."
Yves nods at you, smiling. "I know not the meaning of this tale, but perhaps it will be of some use to you, in the future."

Morte's Tale;

---------------------------------------
NO: "Morte... do you have a story to trade?"

Morte: "Me? Why do *I* have to tell a story?"

NO: "Just tell a story, Morte."

Morte: "Fine, fine..."
"An elderly man was sitting alone on a dark path, right? He wasn't certain of which direction to go, and he'd forgotten both where he was traveling to and who he was. He'd sat down for a moment to rest his weary legs, and suddenly looked up to see an elderly woman before him. She grinned toothlessly and with a cackle, spoke: 'Now your *third* wish. What will it be?'"
"'Third wish?' The man was baffled. 'How can it be a third wish if I haven't had a first and second wish?'"
"'You've had two wishes already,' the hag said, 'but your second wish was for me to return everything to the way it was before you had made your first wish. That's why you remember nothing; because everything is the way it was before you made any wishes.' She cackled at the poor berk. 'So it is that you have one wish left.'"
"'All right,' said the man, "I don't believe this, but there's no harm in wishing. I wish to know who I am.'"
"'Funny,' said the old woman as she granted his wish and disappeared forever. 'That was your first wish.'"

NO: "Nordom: if you have a story to trade, please share it with Yves."

Nordom: "In the 13.7th Revolution, we were required to fix gear and cog sub-set thirty-one in the fifth ring of Mechanus. We removed the obstruction and the gear turned as per its normal speed. Upon completing our task, we were then returned to the Source."

Morte: "What in the hells was that, you stupid polygon?! That's the most boring story I ever heard!"

Nordom: "It was what took place. With embellishments, of course."

Thanks very much Platter ...and yep, I agree about that first tale. Well, it's either a huge oversight, or it was done deliberately.

Ever since I found that story with Infinity Explorer, I've wondered why it was made inaccessible too. It always seemed to me that the whole bit with the legacies and Iannis wasn't complete, and I think being unable to tell him about the Practical One and that story is the reason why it felt that way.

I dunno.

Maybe that story was written into the game before the whole "Deionarra's Sensory Stone" thing was done and they decided to go with that instead. It would certainly make the game easier, from a development standpoint, since they didn't have to come up with a way for us to "talk" to the Practical One before the end of the game.

Also, remember in the conversation with Ravel, when she asks, "What can change the nature of a man" and we are given a whole list of choices? I think this was another way to let each gamer choose based on how they interpreted their own game, instead of just automatically choosing regret because you learned that from the story.

Mr. Insomniac; Well yea it's possible they deliberately left the story inaccessible. I just thought you meant they wanted you to get the story after talking to PI, which makes no sense.

It's not as though I could let you go back to the Clerk's Ward after you've spoken to the PI.
Is there any point before you get to the fortress in which you find out exactly why he killed Deionarra? You couldn't just have NO know without actually finding out.

Well obviously it was going to be triggered BEFORE the fortress. So do just that.

going off-topic from the main thread a bit, but I heard that each of your companions' tales reflects them/you. Morte's is obvious, and I think Nordom's was more for laughs than anything else, but what about the others? I never really understood the point of Annah's and I don't remember Dakkon's. In general, weren't most of Yves' tales deep insights into TNO's case? (I don't remember all of them)
Yves was one of my favorite characters, I wish we could have done more for her besides talking to her mom...

I think the Sensory Stones have different visions for reflecting the person using it (that's why the ones in the private Sensorium have clues for your quest).

If not, who would actually want to feel like they have been badly injured (like in the stone where you talk to Ravel).

Can someone explain the memory you get in that museum? It's the one you get when looking at the painting with the grey hag. Your memory surfaces and she just says: 'That was your first wish...', like in the story from Morte. I found this very odd/disturbing. I have a theory, but I am almost certain that that one is incorrect.

I picked up my first D&D book (two paperback booklets in a white box) about 24 years ago, give or take a century or so. In that entire time nobody ever offered to teach me real magic, we didn't get girls within a mile of the gaming table until 1996 or so, and I DEFINITELY never had a sexy chick dungeon mistress looking to corrupt me and seduce my soul to the dark side.

What the hell's up with that? I'm feeling pretty darn ripped off here!

Oddly enough though, Dave Maldonaldo (not sure if I spelled that right) said a while ago that when he'd written Morte's story, he'd assumed Morte had just made it up on the spot to tease TNO.

Yeah, I put both that story and the painting description in. We all know that memory isn't fact, but merely a fallible recollection of an individual's perception of some event - perhaps what TNO is remembering when he sees the painting is Morte's story (mixed with some associations of his own; three cheers for the subconscious at work) and not an actual event; after all, who knows how many times Morte has told it to him over the years? Or perhaps TNO told Morte and then "forgot," and so Morte mocks him with it. Who knows... the story was really just an excuse to use that lame genie joke, and the painting... heck, everything in that wacky museum is just there to be interesting.

Apologies; it's really nothing deep or particularly interesting.

That seems more evil than chaotic (even though lying is generally a chaotic thing in the game) and Morte's the only PC who's 'good.' Hell, he's the only one who's not neutral. I suppose Morte did lie about a bunch of other stuff... though most of it was with a motive.
If it's just something you put in without really meaning for it to have any significance, I guess it doesn't matter.

Does anyone else love how Vhailor and Fall-From-Grace are the same alignment and yet completely opposite?

Well, Vhailor is probably Lawful Neutral with Evil tendencies, the Mercykiller faction alignment, whilst FFG would be Lawful Neutral with Good tendencies... if she displayed any Lawful intentions, anyway.

And good people can mock others. Just so long as they ultimately believe in a world where everyone is nice and kind and helps everybody else out.

Maybe there aren't a lot of typos but there are definitely several cases of whole words missing from a sentence. I'm almost tempted to say many cases but that's just because there's so much text in the game.
