Icons


Throne of Bhaal. You only get this if you have Throne of Bhaal installed.

A bug. A fault in the game engine with negative consequences.

Stinky cheese. A fault in the game engine that can be abused (see below).


Terms


alacrity
The speed with which a spellcaster can dissipate the residue of magical energy that remains after performing a spell-equivalent action. Six seconds (measured from the start of the action) is standard.

cheese
Deliberately abusing a glitch, programming oversight, bug or other weakness of the game engine, such as the often bad artificial intelligence of your enemies. If a PnP Dungeon Master would not allow it, it is probably cheese. The most famous examples are probably the "Fake Talk" (clicking on blue-circled creatures as if to talk to them, then immediately attacking them while they wait for you to initiate dialog) and Cloudkilling dragons off-screen.

cleric
Any class capable of casting cleric spells (a subtype of divine spells). These are pure Cleric (note the capital C) and Paladin.

combat protection
Any spell that protects against physical attack.

contingency
Contingency or Chain Contingency.

druid
Any class capable of casting druid spells (the other subtype of divine spells) These are pure Druid (again distinguished by the capital D) and Ranger.

mage
Pure Mage (distinguished by a capital M), any of the Specialist Mages or Bard.

memorization
Describes the process by which wizards and priests gain their daily allotment of spells, even though priests do not memorize them in the sense wizards do; priests are supposed to pray for their spells. In the interest of understandability, statements such as "pray for this only when needed" have been replaced with "memorize only when needed".

Mental Speed
Reduction in Casting Time (such as provided by the Robe of Vecna and the Amulet of Power).

PnP
The "Pen and Paper" version of AD&D.

priest
Any class capable of casting divine spells. These are the pure Cleric, Druid, Paladin and Ranger. Spells available to clerics only or druids only state so.

red text
Contradiction to the BGII Manual or the in-game spell description. These texts frequently conflict with the way spells actually work in the game. BGII is not completely in line with the AD&D Player's Handbook as well.

sequencer
Minor Sequencer, Spell Sequencer or Spell Trigger.

shimmering
The partial invisibility that sometimes remains after true invisibility is broken. Shimmering creatures can be seen normally, but not targeted with spells or abilities.

spell-equivalent action
The use of a spell, item or ability. All of these are treated the same way by the game engine for the purpose of regaining your alacrity.

spell protection
Any spell that protects against other spells.

summon
Any creature created through a spell, item or ability, with the exception of extra-planar beings. Extra-planar creatures (demons, devas and planetars) are gated rather than summoned.

true invisibility
Real, non-shimmering invisibility. Truly invisible creatures cannot be seen or targeted through normal means.

wizard
Any class capable of casting arcane spells. These are Mage, Sorcerer, Bard and all of the Specialist Mages.
