[IMG]HardcoreGamers's Thomas Ella has published an opinion piece where he talks about how Citizens of Earth proved that chasing Earthbound is harder than it looks.

It's not that it's a bad game; I read our review and I find little to disagree with. The game is filled to the brim with funny dialogue and offers a pretty fantastic take on modern Americana. It also streamlines many of the less appealing aspects of RPGs; I feel no compulsion to grind - if anything, I feel like I'm over-leveled. Recruiting more citizens to my party is more often satisfying than not, even if I see no reason to change over from the first three I recruited. Everything Citizens of Earth does is "pretty good," and it would absolutely win an "Earthbound Spirit Award" if we had one, but something's missing.

I want more games to try to be Earthbound. Citizens of Earth is appeals to people exactly like me, acting as a sort of Earthbound highlight reel. For the most part, it succeeds. Its wiggling, hallucinogenic battle backdrops send me straight back to my childhood. Its pun-filled dialogue makes me snort with laughter and snap screenshots for later. Its outrageous character design never fails to make me smile. But there's more to Earthbound than hitting cops with a yo-yo. Your mom isn't just there to embarrass you - she's always ready to send you her love by wire and keep the homesickness at bay. There's a lot of admiration for Earthbound in Citizens of Earth, but there's just not enough heart.
